Books (4) About German armies

Some books about the participating German countries in the French Revolution. Most of these fought in the 1792-1795 period as part of the Coalition armies.  Colourful uniforms reminding of the Seven Years War. Starting with the Hanoverian army. Both books together gives a good overview  of the army.

The Hessen were also part of the Armies of the Coalition.



The Mecklenburger were a kind of subsidy troops for the Dutch Republic. I have two books, one Dutch and one German about this small corps.

 Of the Baden troops I have sadly only one of two books. Still searching for the second in which the infantry is described.

Let's look at some new figures or (in the case of Foundry) looking at an old range which appears again ( well, I saw them some days ago, didn't know they were at the market again).

French, Austrian and Prussian figures for the FR are listed again although the ranges concist mostly of infantry. Only the French have cavalry (chasseurs) although hussars in mirliton are available and almost universally usable. Maybe the recent Prussian cavalry additions for the 1800-1807 period could be used for earlier FR.Artillery for all three mentioned countries are available although limbers etc are not.

Foundry has also a Vendean range of figures and civilian characters. Although not complete I like the range but the figures, as they are older, are somwhat smaller then the newer ranges by Elite, Eureka and Trent.

Elite

Elite has added some Hungarian infantry to their range of FR figures in firing line poses and some artillery crews. Although I have still don't seen them in the "flesh" they have their charme (and for the Christmas period they have some offers).  

Eureka

Some photos appear on the web of their expected generals and as usual, they look great. The picures show Russian, Austrian and French generals. Also Eureka announced that the FR Cossacks will appear soon.

Starting with Paddy Griffith book about the Art of War of Revolutionary France. Folowed by the Ospreys about French infantry

The French royal emigré were formed into various corps in British or Dutch pay. Two ospreys have this theme. I like the two volumes.

After looking at figures (although figures will be added when available) let's take a look at some books for the French Revolution. The following books are the ones I have.

Starting with Funcken, Les Soldats de la revolution Francaise. I don't know if there is an English version, but even in French it is great. And You can see this also on line:  goto

The 18th century Funcken (2 volumes, I have them in French) only has some plates of revolutionary troops esp the early 1790 ones.
The Blandford: Uniforms of the French Revolutionary Wars by Philip Haythornthwaite was the first real FR book I owned; I loved the period immidiately. Sadly the cover is gone missing, so the first, title page, is shown.

                       

Some books which describes the French Revolution are:

Some books about the early campaigns (some in French). I myself like the Corporal's Brown book as it shows how many marching and counter marching was done in this period. Also it describes how the troops experienced very strong winter conditions as if it happens in Russia but it is in the eastern part of the Netherlands.

Magister Militum
Another manufacturer who makes 25mm French Revolution figures is Magister Militum. See http://www.navigatorminiatures.com/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=5&strPageHistory=cat .

 Although maybe better known for their 15mm figures, they also have a small 25mm figure range consisting of some 20 French figures and one (1) Austrian figure for this period.


Hinchcliffe
The old Hinchcliffe range ( http://www.hinchliffe.co.uk/home.htm  ) also has some French  Revolution figures in the seperate NFR range. I must say that I haven't seen them in the flesh but there are some pictures presented on the site.
Hinhcliffe is the only range who has the Hanoverian 14th light infantry (but no officer etc) and Bavarian 1790 line infantry (both see under). But, the range is not complete.

The new Eureka Russians for the 1799 campaign, although not yet available and not yet on the Eureka website, are beautiful. The to be released infantry and cossacks are here:

Eureka (new expected figures and images)

Thanks to Chronofus-net (look at http://www.chronofus.net/php/ ) there are picures of new, but not yet available (at least nog on the catalogue presented French and Austrian figures for the FR).

The French pictures show and addition to the Chasseurs (although more Napoleonic).

The Austrian range show addittions to the cheveau leger figures ( but now in resting position)  and artillery. The last ones have new artillerist but most importantly also the so called handlangers which I find beautiful figures. These also maybe could be used as grenz artillerist for later period.
